This antibody is specific for alpha-gal epitopes (Galalpha1-3Galbeta1-4GlcNAc-R) on glycosphingolipids.

This antibody binds to synthetic alpha-gal epitopes linked to BSA and to alpha-gal epitopes on glycolipid molecules from rabbit and bovine erythrocytes (Chen et al, 2000; Galili et al, 1987). However, in contrast to monoclonal anti-Gal antibodies originating from alpha1,3GT knockout mice [M86; B1H2; B4H2], this antibody does not bind to alpha-gal epitopes on carbohydrate chains of natural glycoproteins. This antibody has been used to confirm that Galalphal-3Gal glycosphingolipids are expressed at low levels by human erythrocytes (Galili et al, 1987).
