- Scientific DescriptionHuman platelet membrane glycoprotein Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GP IIb/IIIa) is a dominate receptor on the platelet membrane with very high molecular weight (>200kDa). After the platelet is activated, the GP IIb/IIIa receptor complex changes conformation and binds to fibrinogen in blood circulation with high affinity. The activation of platelets is initiated locally when the endothelial layer is wounded and the platelets are exposed to the collagen underneath the endothelium. The fibrinogen aggregates with platelets when binding to the GP IIb/IIIa receptor on platelets, thus primary haemostasis (Platelet clot) is formed.
