The binding of this antibody to neural tissues like retina, brain, spinal cord, and dorsal root ganglia was detected using indirect immunofluorescence. The specific antigen that this antibody binds was localized to the region of the plasma membrane of most of the neuron cells and the antigen was not present on axons or dendrites. This antibody had a cytotoxic effect on 8-day chicken embryo retina cells at a dilution of 1:300,000. This cytotoxic activity was inhibited by GQ ganglioside fraction from bovine brain and by N-acetylneuraminic acid but not by other purified gangliosides (PMID: 388422). The antigen recognized by this antibody is expressed on a variety of tumor cells including glioblastomas (PMID: 19243384). This antibody was used in the flow cytometric characterization of mouse oligodendroglial cell populations for study of mouse demyelinating disease (PMID: 25247590). This antibody can be used in the immunocytochemical study of differentiation protein-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into oligodendrocytes (PMID: 28170178). This antibody was used to study the localization of gangliosides in postmortem brain tissue of Alzheimer disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) using immunohistochemistry (PMID: 1321969).
