- Scientific DescriptionThymidine kinase (TK) belongs to agroup of enzymes such as dihydrofolatereductase, thymidylate synthase, andDNA polymerase that are involved inDNA synthesis and precursorproduction. High levels of theseenzymes are present in proliferatingcells, and low levels are found in restingcells, due to multiple regulatorymechanisms that ensure exclusiveexpression of these enzymes inreplicating cells. TK is responsible forcatalyzing the phosphorylation ofthymidine, which functions as a part ofthe pyrimidine salvage pathway involvedin DNA synthesis. The activities ofenzymes such as TK are essential forthe activation of severalchemotherapeutically importantnucleoside analogues that areadministered as prodrugs.
