This antibody is specific for the VACV antigen A33, a viral glycoprotein associated with the outer membrane of extracellular enveloped viruses. A33 is known to elicit protective antibody responses.

The specificity of this antibody for VACV has been confirmed by IF assays (Meng, 2011). This antibody exhibited strong complement-mediated neutralization of the extracellular enveloped form of vaccinia virus in the presence of complement, and was able to protect mice against weight loss and death following an in vivo VACV challenge (Matho, 2015).
