    Due to its outstanding antibacterial properties, chlor-amphenicol is an often used antibiotic in the pro-duc-tion of milk, meat and eggs. In humans it leads to haema-to-toxic side effects, like the chlor-am-phe-ni-col induced aplastic anemia. This has caused low li-mits in Germany, e.g. 1 microg/kg for milk, meat and eggs. Till now the chloramphenicol concentration was de-ter-mined by radioimmunoassay or by gas chro-ma-tography. However, compared with con-ven-tio-nal methods, enzyme immuno-assays show some essen-tial advantages. There is no need to work with radioactive ma-terial, the required assay time is shorter and the sen-sitivity is better than with chro-ma-to-graphic methods. The Chloramphenicol test provides a rapid, sensitive and reliable assay for the determina-tion of chloramphenicol in food and urine. 40 sam-ples can be assayed in duplicate within 60 minutes.
