EMEM, or Eagles Minimal Essential Medium, is modified to contain Earles Balanced Salt Solution. This basal medium is widely used for the growth of many mammalian cells. Supplementation may be required, most commonly with 5-10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) for cell culture use, and requires a 5-10% CO2 environment to maintain physiological pH, or be used as a base for development of a serum free medium.
