- Scientific DescriptionThe cascade of biochemical reactions within the vision system is complex and contains numerous steps taking place in nanoseconds. RGS is a family of GTPase accelerating proteins (GAPs). RGS9 is a member of this family and is the predominant source of GAP activity in rod outer segments. RGS9-1, found predominately in vertebrate cone and rod photoreceptors, is a useful model for understanding how rapid recovery kinetics of the light responses in retinal photoreceptors take place.
