- Scientific DescriptionAmpicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Formulations containing ampicillin have been used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. This is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. Administration with beta-lactamase cleaves the beta-lactam ring of Ampicillin and inactivates it. Ampicillin is widely used in cell culture as a selective agent for transformed cells expressing beta-lactamase. Can also be used as reference material. - Chemical. CAS: 69-52-3.
