- Scientific DescriptionLDL receptor is a transmembrane protein, which binds LDL (low-density lipoprotein), the major cholesterol-carrying lipoprotein of plasma, and transports it into cells by endocytosis. In order to be internalized, the receptor-ligand complexes must first cluster into clathrin-coated pits. The complexes recycle through the endocytic pathway. Variants affecting this gene cause familial hypercholesterolemia, a disorder of lipoprotein metabolism characterized by elevated serum LDL cholesterol levels. Besides, LDLR also acts as a receptor for hepatitis C virus in hepatocytes and vesicular stomatitis virus.
