The antibody is specific for the testosterone molecule. Testosterone is the primary sex hormone and anabolic steroid in males.

The binding characterization of the antibody was done using ELISA. To show the effectiveness of this antibody, a competitive immunoassay was performed on the serum of unknown patients using the human version of this antibody. It was compared to a commercial testosterone kit. The results were comparable (WO1999012974). The original Fab fragment of this antibody, having 5 optimised CDRs, showed 32-fold higher relative affinity to testosterone, 60-fold lower cross-reactivity to DHEAS, 2 fold lower cross-reactivity to 5alpha-DHT and over 9-fold lower cross-reactivity to androstenedione compared to the original monoclonal antibody (Ari Hemminki, 1998; ISBN 951-38-5343-8).
