- Scientific DescriptionCalmodulin from bovine brain is a highly conserved, multifunctional calcium-binding protein that plays a central role in cellular signaling across eukaryotic organisms. Structurally, it contains four EF-hand motifs that each bind a calcium ion, triggering conformational changes that enable calmodulin to interact with and regulate a vast array of target proteins, many of which cannot bind calcium directly. Through these interactions, calmodulin orchestrates essential physiological processes, including muscle contraction, metabolism, inflammation, apoptosis, intracellular movement, nerve growth, and both short- and long-term memory formation. Mutations in calmodulin genes (CALM1–3) can cause calmodulinopathies, a group of severe inherited arrhythmia syndromes such as long QT syndrome and catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, often manifesting in childhood and sometimes leading to sudden cardiac death2. In research and biotechnology, bovine brain calmodulin is widely used in vitro to study calcium signaling pathways, protein interactions, and drug screening due to its purity and functional conservation.
