The DEFA3/defensin alpha 3 protein is a potent effector in innate immunity against a variety of infectious agents, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It neutralizes bacterial toxins, such as Bacillus anthracis lethal factor and Staphylococcus aureus leukocidin, and plays a key role in blocking herpes simplex virus infection by preventing viral attachment.
