This synthetic glucocorticoid acts as an agonist of human glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and binds with a higher affinity than the natural ligand cortisol. Through GR activation, dexamethasone has both transactivating and transrepressing effects on gene expression, resulting in anti-inflammatory properties.
