Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride is the active isomer of medetomidine and is a highly potent and selective alpha2-adrenergic agonist (Ki values are 1.08 and 1750 nM for alpha2- and alpha1-adrenoceptors respectively) with analgesic and sedative properties. Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride is used clinically as an anesthetic agent to reduce anxiety and tension and promote relaxation and sedation without causing respiratory depression.
