Diethyl maleate is a maleate ester resulting from the formal condensation of both carboxy groups of maleic acid with ethanol. Diethyl maleate (DEM), a thiol-reactive alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound, depletes glutathione (GSH) in exposed cells [1] .
