The GCAP1 protein is a key regulator in the visual system, regulating retinal guanylyl cyclase activity in response to intracellular calcium concentration. Under low calcium conditions, GCAP1 stimulates retinal guanylyl cyclase to return rod photoreceptors to the dark state.
