Interferon tau-1 (IFNT1) serves as an important paracrine hormone that initiates maternal recognition of pregnancy. After interacting with endometrial receptors, possibly type I interferon receptors, IFNT1 blocks estrogen receptor expression and prevents estrogen-induced upregulation of oxytocin receptor expression.
