The MMP-16 protein functions as an endopeptidase capable of degrading various components of the extracellular matrix, particularly type III collagen and fibronectin. Its effects extend to the activation of progelatinase A, which contributes to the dynamic remodeling of the extracellular matrix within blood vessels.
