NOTCH2NL is a human-specific protein that promotes neural progenitor cell proliferation through Notch signaling regulation, thereby crucially driving the evolutionary expansion of the neocortex. By enhancing self-renewal and downregulating neuronal differentiation genes, NOTCH2NL delays progenitor cell maturation and promotes increased neuronal production.
