Glycophorin A (GPA) alongside with Glycophorin B (GPB) are rythrocyte blood group determinants that minimize erythrocyte aggregation during the circulation of blood. Thus study of glycophorin A is useful to understand processes of erythroid cell development, and to aid in identifying erythroid leukemias.
