Cystine/glutamate transporter

The SLC7A11 protein forms a heterodimer with SLC3A2 and acts as an antiporter to exchange extracellular L-cystine for intracellular L-glutamate across the plasma membrane. This sodium-independent electroneutral transport, with a 1:1 stoichiometry, relies on high intracellular levels of L-glutamate and intracellular reduction of L-cystine.
