The FGF-1 protein plays a key role in regulating a variety of cellular processes, serving as a potent mitogen and ligand for FGFR1 and integrins. In the presence of heparin, FGF-1 binds to FGFR1, initiating dimerization and autophosphorylation, resulting in multiple signaling cascades.
