The IL12 p40 chain can form a novel cytokine (IL23) when it joins a p19 chain. IL12 and IL23 show overlapping (and some distinct) biological characteristics. Overexpression of IL12 p40 may be involved in a variety of immunopathologies, including Crohns disease.
