It is a fluorogenic MU substrate for detecting galactosidase in cell extracts and purified enzyme preparations using a fluorescence microplate reader or fluorometer. It is used as a substrate in beta-galactosidase activity assay. Hydrolysis of MUG releases the fluorescent product 4-MU.
